What You Did Not Know About Graphic Design

Most often, when we hear graphic design what comes to mind are posters, flyers, wedding invitation cards, book and magazine covers, etc.

While indeed, these examples are products of graphic design, they are not all there is to graphic designing.

Graphic design is a whole big, other tech and creative sector. It encompasses business, tech, artistic and creative sectors.

So that means a graphic designer is a business person, a techie, an artist and of course a creative.

Graphic designing is said to have started from the days of old with Egyptian hieroglyphs and has evolved consistently over the years to what we have today.

So what is graphic design? who is a graphic designer? These and more are what would be the focus of this post.

What is Graphic Design?

There are a lot of definitions on what graphic design is. Two that I find most relatable are:

The American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), defined graphic design as

"the art and practice of planning and projecting ideas and experiences with visual and textual content."

Jordan Wahl defines it as

"the art of visual communication that combines images, words and ideas to convey information to an audience, especially to produce a specific effect."

In simple none technical terms, graphic design is simply passing a message in visual format using images and text (words).

That means, graphic design transcends just the design of flyers, banners, posters or wedding cards.

It conveys a personâ€™s ideas to others through the use of visuals and of course design.

Who is a Graphic Designer?

We have said before that a graphic designer is sometimes a business person, a techie, always and artist and a creative.

In addition to the above qualities, a graphic designer is a professional who specializes in the art of converting ideas into visual form using designs, images and text.

A graphic designer can be an animator; making animations, a UI designer; creating designs for front end of web pages. Graphic designer for online marketing campaigns, or the one which we are all familiar with, design for print such as flyers, posters and the likes.

In recent times, with the surge of interest in digital marketing, graphic design has become a central powerhouse for most marketing campaigns.

Designs are needed for posters both for social media or website ads and branding purposes.

As such graphic designers are constantly sought after by businesses, organisations and even government bodies.

Who Can Become a Graphic Designer?

With the right training, literally, anybody can become a graphic designer. Unlike some professions that require certain physical characteristics like say Aviation, graphic design is an open boot for anyone that desires to create art.

The amazing thing about graphic design is that you donâ€™t really need to go into it full time.

Letâ€™s say you are a business owner for instance, you can do well with a graphic design skill because it would enable you connect better with your target audience.

It is often said that no one can tell your story better than you.

So, while it is true that you can always pay a graphic designer to create designs to market your brand or product, it is far more better and effective, if you possess this skill yourself.

Why?

Because, you alone know and understand you brand story. Hence, you are in the best position to efficiently create designs that convey your ideas to others.

Bottom line is, with the right training, anyone can be a graphic designer. You can be a graphic designer.
