Shalom Solomon

A business logo is an important part of your brand's identity. We've established over and over the importance of logos to businesses and branding in previous posts on Branding for businesses, logo design and the value of logos in marketing.
Business logos are a vital part of your business' brand identity. Along with your business/brand name, they serve as the key takeaways and mostly the first point of contact a client or prospective client has with your business.

As such, your business logo is meant to give a good first impression and capture your target audience's attention from first contact. A good business logo that performs this function would add value to your brand as a whole.
Of course, getting a good logo would have to start from the very first step of your logo design process.

Designing your logo is a very delicate process. In the post on the features of a good logo, we discussed six (6) key attributes every great logo must have. These attributes must also be ingrained into the design process of your business logo. A business logo should be:
  • Simple
  • Unique
  • Memorable
  • Versatile
  • Relevant and
  • Timeless

What Does it Mean for a Business Logo to be Versatile?

Versatility is a quality of logo designs to work well on all and any of a business' paraphernalia such as stickers, business cards, sign posts, billboards, letterheads, stationaries, cups, mugs, magazines, etc.
To avoid unnecessary loss of time and effort, business owners, should ascertain that their logos would fit and look good on all their business paraphernalia, right from the design process.

How can you achieve this?

Should you request that the designer print your logo on business cards, a glass surface, embossed on journals, etc?
What if you don't like the first design? The designer would have to print more with every subsequent logo design till  you find the perfect fit.
It could work but it would be outrageously expensive.
Well, there is a cheaper more sensible alternative, Logo Mock-ups.

What is a Logo Mock-up?

A logo mock-up is a representation of what a logo would look like on real items and in real life situations such as your business website, stationaries, business cards, etc.
Your logo mock up should show images of your logo on objects and surfaces that require your business logo.
For instance if you run a cosmetic business, your mock up should include 3D (3-dimensional) images of your logo on bottles, cream or lotion jars, business cards, plastic containers, plastic bags, your website, etc.

Why are logo Mock-ups important?

1. They are real life representations of your business logo:
They are realistic and give you a feel of what your logo would look like in real life situations and on real objects.
2. They can be easily changed:
Logos can be easily changed and adjusted if you do not like what the mock-ups look like.
3. They save cost and effort:
Using logo mock-ups would save cost for the business owner and ease the process of designing a logo that fits for the logo designer.

Conclusion

Brand or business logos are visual representations of your business' brand identity, as such great care and attention should be given to the process of designing. Versatility is one of the basic qualities a brand logo should possess and a logo mock-up would go a long way to enable you ascertain that your proposed logo would be the right fit for your business. So in designing your logo, do well as a business owner to ask for a mock-up before deciding on the final product.
