Television advertising is a form of traditional broadcast marketing. Television advertising is known by other names such as television commercials, commercial, adverts, TV ads. Marketers and advertisers usually refer to television advertising as TVCs. Television advertising is a popular and very common form businesses, organisations and most commonly Politicians use to market and promote their products or cause as the case may be.
Although digital marketing is taking over the advertising scene, Television advertising still remains the most productive and most efficient way to market products and reach a target population. Spending time in front of a Television still remains the most common way people spend their leisure time, with family or individually. Hence, television channels are still a viable marketing medium.
Television advertising is simply using television channels to market a product, service or promote a cause. The aim of advertising using television channels is majorly to reach a wide demographic of people who are also the viewers of the television channel.
Using television to market products is quite popular not only because it produces results, but also because it offers marketers and businesses a variety of options to reach their target audience and market their products. Azcentral lists a total of twelve types of television commercials. We will be looking at the most common and significant forms of television commercials below:
Demonstration television commercials focus on showing the viewer what the product being advertised can do. A good example of this type of commercial is the Hypo advert where toilet bowls and white surfaces that were previously stained, become sparkling white after they were cleaned with Hypo. For a demonstration ad to be effective, it must clearly state the name of the product or brand, else the viewer might remember that there is a product that offers such effect and might end up buying an alternative brand because they forgot the name of your product.
An infomercial is a television commercial that focuses on educating a prospective customer or television viewers about a product, service or brand. Infomercials are typically longer than regular television commercials. They span from thirty minutes to sometimes an hour. Infomercials connect to customers on real time basis, they provide toll-free numbers that buyers can use to reach them while the infomercial is still on air. Most of the perks they offer as bait are promotions and discount.
These type of television commercials are very common with medical products. Though this class of tv ads are similar to demonstration ads, they show the problem that the product addresses and cut to where the product has solved the problem. A good example is the Baba Blue ad for Vicks or Tom Tom ad where someone who had problem speaking because of a bad cold would be able to speak clearly after taking the mints.
In this form of television commercial, a specific person is used as a spokesman for the product, company or brand. It is believed that this form of advertising enables the viewers to build a connection with the brand ambassador, consequently increasing trust in the product advertised. Most celebrities for instance serve as brand ambassadors for various Nigerian brands. The business leverages on the fan base of these ambassadors to push their products. For instance, Wizkid's fans are more likely to listen to him and also believe him when he says Techno phones are the best products in the market.
