Corporate Graphic Design

Shalom Solomon

When you tell people you are a graphic designer, the first things they assume you do might be designing flyers, wedding cards, invitation cards, digital posters which constitute the everyday graphic design products we often see. While every graphic designer can design a decent flyer, not all specialize in designing posters and magazines. In our post on the types of Graphic Design, we discussed seven of the major types of graphic design and their areas of specialization, one of which was Corporate Graphic Designing. In this post, we’d go in depth and see what Corporate Graphic Design is and what differentiates it from the other types of Graphic Design.

What is Corporate Graphic Design?

Corporate Graphic Design is a form of graphic designing that specializes on the visual branding of corporate bodies. It entails everything from logo design down to the specification of a business’ colour palette.

A graphic designer that specializes in corporate design would need to have solid knowledge on the workings of corporate bodies, the intricacies of branding, copywriting and the principles of marketing among others.

Why is Corporate Design Important?

Corporate design was considered something only the big wigs in business should worry about. At the turn of the decade though with trends like economic recession, there has been a significant surge in the number of startups in Nigeria to compensate for changes in the economy. The business sector was and is still brimming with new businesses, hence, the competition for startups became fiercer. The need to stand out in the throng of businesses became inevitable. Suddenly, every business needed elements like logos, patterns, colours, objectives, brand tone, and so on.

Now, the question still remains, Why is Graphic Design Important for Business?

The answer to this question is simple, advertising and branding. These two concepts are a part of the major pillars that hold up the structure of your business. We all know that it is not enough to find a problem and offer solutions to the problem; you also need to make people aware that you have a solution to their problem and sometimes even make people aware that such a problem exists in the first place.

One benefit of graphic design that cannot be achieved by long blog posts, articles and seminars is easy absorption. The human mind is designed in such a way that it picks up visual elements faster, things like colours, images and stylized texts make it easy for the human brain to quickly absorb the message your business is trying to pass. Asides absorption, the human brain can also easily recall things that are presented in stimulating visual content.

So, dear business owner, why should you use graphic design?

1. Consistency
Developing design elements such as a logo, brand colours, your brand name, etc. go a long way in maintaining consistency in your brand's visual identity and tone. Your brand's visual identity and brand tone are important when it comes to developing brand consistency. Which in turn improves awareness for your business.

2. Easy absorption:

A recent study showed that the human brain picks up visual elements 60,000 times faster than text. This means that your ads have a greater advantage when you use graphic design to pass your message.

3. Increased brand awareness:

The consistent use of visual branding elements increases awareness for your brand. Not only that, your business' products are made unique and stand out from other products in the market.

4. Memorability:

The same way people are able to absorb your messages faster when you use design elements, they are also able to remember your ads faster when you use the appropriate design elements. Colours are quite helpful in mkings things easier to remember. This is why people cour code items to enable them differentiate between each and remember what each colour coded it is used for.
