Digital marketing is the hub for advertisement with the world's ever increasing dependency on electronic/digital devices. The older generation is fond of saying we live with our heads buried in one digital device or the other. This is because everything is going digital these days. There are newspapers online, e-books online and in PDF formats, music in mp3 formats or on audio sites online, banking applications, meetings are held online and with the pandemic, you can get married online. Since the virtual world is eating an awful lot into the the relevance of the real world, marketing has followed suit and gone digital also. 

Digital marketing is the use of electronic devices to advertise and create awareness about a business, product, brand or service. It began as early as the the Nineteen hundreds with the invention of the first radio. From that time to the present, it's relevance has been growing. 
Now, there are various ways one can utilize the opportunities given us by the digital era. These are also known as the strategies of digital marketing.

The Strategies For Digital Marketing

There are numerous strategies for marketing and we might as well say there are still more to be found. However, some strategies have been singled out from experience, success and some experiments of others as effective for a successful digital marketing campaign. As expected, we have singled out and brought these strategies to you in this feature.

1. Search Engine Optimization (SEO):

This strategy of digital marketing involves the building of your business' website so it ranks highly among results such that your website shows first when keywords related to your business are entered into a search engine. 

When people search for a product or service online they are most at times ready to buy the product or gather information on how to buy the product. An important reason why SEO is a key to marketing your business is the fact that very few people go past the first page of their search results. I mean, it is most likely that they find what they are looking for in the first page. So, you must do all you can to ensure that your website is on that first page to avoid losses.

2. Email advertising:

Email advertising is a strong digital marketing strategy in that, even if the person you're sending emails to doesn't need your product or service at that time, when they do, they'll definitely remember your product. Marketing via emails enables you to tailor your mails to a customer's previous searches or purchases; a more individualised approach to marketing. Therefore advertising a product or service a potential client would most likely be interested in. A lot of companies use email marketing to promote their brand and inform customers of updates in their business.

3. Content Marketing:

This strategy goes hand in hand with SEO. Content marketing involves educating, engaging and reaching your target audience through content using videos, blog posts, images and so on.  You don't always need to be advertising through direct means. A subtle form of advertising and brand awareness through educating customers on topics related to your business through content marketing is effective. Especially when paired with search engine optimization. For instance, a cosmetic company can make videos on how to care for the skin or simple makeup hack they feel customers should know. Through these posts the company would include their products at applicable points of the article. This strategy not only serves to reach your target audience, it informs them of the benefits of using your product and how to use your product.

4. Pay-Per-Click Advertisments (PPC):

Pay-Per-Click advertising is a paid form of digital marketing. With Pay-Per-Click advertising, your ad shows up whenever a user's search entry includes keywords linked to your ad. The ad shows at the top of other results. Now, the catch here is that you don't pay for the ad space, you only pay when the user clicks on your ad. After which he/she is directed to your page or website where they meet a strong call to action for the product or service. Research has shown that 50% of clicks on PPC ads results in an actual purchase. According to Webfx, you get $8 for every $1 spent on PPC ads on Google. That means you get eight times Return Of Investment on any amount spent on advertising with the PPC strategy.

5. Marketing on TV or Radio:

I remember when I was little, when Royco ad first came on TV; it was so catchy that my Dad came back the next day with a pack of Royco cubes. Indomie noodles had the same success with it's "to me, to you, it's up to us to make the world a better place" advert; children loved it, soon every house with kids had at least a pack of indomie. 

TV and Radio marketing although the oldest forms of digital marketing are both relevant and very much effective. On average, people spend around five hours a day watching TV. Yes, putting up advertisement on TV and Radio channels might be expensive, they have proved time and time again to produce the most results (especially for TV ads) when utilized properly. In Nigeria it is a common occurrence for a family to converge after a day's work to the comfort of their homes and the entertaining light of a television set. 
A majority of homes around the world have at least one television set; in the US, 90% of its population watch TV and 50% claim they tend to believe Television adverts over ads online. So imagine the huge reach your advert has and the influence it would have when you utilize the few seconds or minutes you have to pass a strong and compelling advert. Getting on shows as a guest on TV and Radio channels is another effective strategy to create awareness for, advertise and promote your business.

6. Social Media Marketing:

Social media marketing constitutes the use of social media platforms to create awareness for, promote and advertise your business. The unique thing about social media marketing is that it has opportunities that work for any amount of money you are willing to part with. You can market on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter with as little as zero Naira. Although, you have to be ready to put in your time and effort if you don't want to spend a lot of money. You have to build your page, account or handle with people that fit into your target audience. If you are ready to put in money on the other hand, you can collaborate with social media influencers to push your brand, pay for sponsored ads on Facebook, pay for your ads to be placed on YouTube and others. The opportunities for marketing social media offers are vast and very cheap when compared with the Return On Investment (ROI).

The advantages and opportunities digital marketing offers are numerous. The above listed strategies have proven to be most effective. So what are you waiting for, find a strategy that works for you, research on it and you are ready to start your digital marketing campaign.
