Shalom Solomon

Gone are the days when TV, radio and billboards  were the in thing for marketing. With the advent of the digital age, marketing on online platforms has become the most popular and effective way to go global with your business.

Content marketing is a form of digital marketing that focuses on using content to advertise, promote and create awareness for a brand or product.
Are you thinking of going into content marketing? Or are you a content marketer looking to up your game this year? Count yourself lucky then because this feature is exactly what you need. We'll be answering that question of how you can up your content marketing game in a few points.

1. Know Your Audience

The first thing you need to understand as a content marketer is that, you work for your audience.

I said, you work for your audience.
Why do I say so, with so much vigour?
Because in any form of marketing, your target audience should be the center of your attention.
Content marketing would be fruitful only when you study your audience, understand what kind of content appeals the most to them the most and dish it in catchy contents.
Let's take for instance, children between the ages of 5 to 11 are your target audience, you can't package a 5,000 word article on the benefits of vegetables on child growth and expect them to read it (I myself wouldn't read it if it isn't school work).
Bottom line is: tailor your content to what appeals to your target audience. It might be videos, infographics, blog posts, social media posts, etc. What ever it is, give what your audience would want to see.

2. Consistency

Do you remember Super Story? Do you remember how we were all glued to our TV sets by 8:00pm every Thursday. Now, imagine that WAP ups one Thursday and say there'd be no super story? How would you have felt? Then, let's say they repeat this more than once, randomly. What would happen? They would lose viewers, people would pick other alternatives for their Thursday nights maybe another show.

Consistence is the key to your audience's trust. Which is one of the goals content marketing aims to achieve; your audience trusting that you have the information they need. Be consistent in your content, your style of writing and your content publishing schedule.
According to Influence agents, consistent content marketing means two things: consistent quality and consistent publishing. Be consistent enough that your audience seek for your content when they have a specific need.

3. Utilize Content Marketing Tools

Everyone loves an easy way to do things. And tools we all know make tasks easier.

Using an axe or chainsaw to cut a tree would achieve the same end result but using a chainsaw is more sensible. Using an axe would require greater effort, more time and the result would be messy. A chain saw on the other hand, albeit very noisy, is neat, fast and requires little effort compared to an axe.
Going about content marketing without utilizing the vast tools at your disposal is like using an axe to fell a tree. There are tools for content marketing such as:

  • Headline analyzer, in their words to write headlines that drive traffic, shares and search results.
  • BuzzSumo, reveals topics you should write about and helps you find influencers to help you market your content.
  • Evernote, is your digital jotter (your second brain, they say), you can capture, organize and share notes from your computer to your phone.
  • Kred, to measure your online influence.
  • Tweroid, to figure out the best time of the day to send tweets for the best results. You can find more content marketing tools here.

4. Your Content Should be Unique and Have Value

Anything that doesn't have value is more or less useless. Nobody would read a 2000 word blog post with very little content or watch a long video of a person saying gibberish. Even Comedy skits have value.

Your content should be Unique as well. Please, do not plagiarise (copy) other people's content it's wrong; it's stealing. And it doesn't reflect well on the image of your business or brand.
Just as you wouldn't enjoy egusi if it tastes like jollof rice (imagine eating fufu with jollof rice, totally disgusting). Make your content have its own unique taste. As they say, variety is the spice of life.

5. Develop Strong SEO

Search Engine Optimization works hand in hand with content marketing. Develop your SEO by creating content with keywords that relate to your content. Search engines are a lot advanced than they were before, so stuffing your content with keywords wouldn't help your content show on the first SERP (search engine result page).

Search engines would only place your content on first results only if it has key words in a post with value. 57% of marketers admit that SEO helps them generate more leads than any other marketing strategy.

6. Make Sure Your Post Has the Right Length

Ensuring your post has the right length is another great tip for content marketing. SEO works well for posts with the right length because they drive higher engagement. Your content has a higher chance of appearing on the first page for search results if your posts is the right length. For blog posts, have at least 2000 words (that have quality content of course, don't go rambling because you want to reach the right word count). For social media posts, research has shown that posts with at most 80 words content have more engagement than those with longer content. For YouTube, the description section is what signals the search engine to your post. So, try to ensure that your description carries keywords to drive top-notch SEO.

There are so many other tips for improving your content marketing game, study and implement the hacks outlined in this article and you stand to be the best content marketer out there. Goodluck.
