12 Tips on How To Use SEO Yourself To Promote Your Business Through Digital Marketing

Shalom Solomon

In previous posts on search engine optimization, we discussed why search engine optimization is important for businesses looking to promote and market their products and services using digital marketing strategy. Well, in this post, we'll be considering tips on how to do search engine optimization yourself without the help of a search engine optimization agency.
Let's get into it, shall we.

1. Establish Your Ideal Audience

First and foremost, before starting out with your SEO project, you should create and establish who your ideal customer is.
It's basically who your target audience is. You can do this based on age range, occupation, location, gender, marital status, etc. Doing this first, would enable you set a guide or map to create relevant content and use keywords that your target audience are in need of.

2. Using Keywords

The next step is researching and using the right keywords. Keywords are simply words or search terms in your web content that make it possible for internet users to find your site when they enter a query into a search engine.
One of the top factors for ranking on SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages) is keywords. Research relevant keywords and include them in your title, url, content and meta tags. Meta tags are texts that provide information about your content to a search engine and website visitors, they are displayed on the SERP.

3. Create Valuable and Relevant Content

What you should avoid is stuffing your content with keywords in a bid to fool the Search Engine. Google has updated it's ranking factors to include relevant content. So, web crawlers would push your website's ranking lower even if it has all the necessary keywords but is lacking valuable content.

Search engines are seeking to provide users with better results and offer valuable content to users, hence, if users leave your web page the moment or few seconds after getting on it, your ranking would be pushed lower still.

4. Update Your Website Consistently

Put up new content regularly on your website; daily, monthly, twice a month, as often as you can manage. This would encourage webcrawlers to visit your page more often and enable your web site to keep up with new trends. This is why a lot of websites have blogs that are updated from time to time.
Being a business owner and running a blog with consistent valuable blog posts might not be easy, so, you can keep your web page updated with valuable and relevant images, videos, infographics and so on.

5. Avoid Plagiarism

Web crawlers are not stupid, if your web page has exactly the same content with another, your's would not show at all on the Search Engine Result Pages. Create your own valuable content, would also facilitate building a loyal audience and customer base.

6. Use Internal Links

Link your blog posts together. It would make your web page interactive and can keep users longer on your page when they move from one content to another. The longer time users spend on your web page, the higher your website's ranking.

7. Grow Your Inbound Link

Improve your web Page's visibility by linking your website to a popular website. You can do this by guest writing on a popular website or requesting that they include your content with a link to your website on their posts.
A referral from a top website can push your site several notches higher on the search engine's ranking ladder. This is why your content should be valuable and relevant. No reputable popular website would accept to refer your web page content if it has no value.

8. Share Your Content

Building your website's ranking from bottom to the first search engine result page especially if you're doing it yourself might take a long time. In the meantime, do you leave your content sitting pretty on your webpage until you achieve visibility? Please don't. Infact if your website has zero traffic, it might be difficult to climb the ranking ladder.
An easy way to generate traffic for your web page  is sharing content that links back to your website on social media. Build a community on social media or join one and share your content to your target audience.

9. Use Simple, Readable URL

A popular qoute from My Site Auditor, goes
"if humans cannot read your urls, neither can machines".
Ranking on Google's SERP shows that web sites with simple, easily readable URLs, rank higher than those with complex, mixed up and unclear URLs.
URLs are case sensitive so, avoid randomly mixing uppercase letters with lower case letters.

Although, Google's SEO ranking factors makes no mention of URL case sensitivity, inconsistency in your URL's case does not help your website's ranking on the SERP.
Google does not recommend using underscore (_) to space words in your url, rather, use a hyphen (-) as it makes it easier for people to read. Using a hyphen would therefore improve the rank of your site on the search engine's result page.

10. Mobile Friendly Web Page

How many people carry their laptops and desktops around for searching the web when they can conveniently do so with their mobile phones. Facebook became very popular because it was the first social media platform that created a version for all kinds of mobile phones and search engines.
Many internet users prefer to access the web to meet their needs through their mobile phones. It is for this reason that Google recently added mobile friendliness to it's over 200 ranking factors. Hence, if your website doesn't support use on mobile phones, your ranking on Google's result page would be very low.

11. Use Analytics Tools

Use tools like Google analytics to keep track of the traffic and changes on your website. Carrying out daily Analytics would enable you know what you are doing wrong and enable you figure out where the problem is coming from. It would show if your SEO strategy is producing the desired results.

12. Develop Top-notch UX

Google has changed it's ranking factors to priotize the satisfaction of internet users. Every tip in this piece is leading to the ultimate satisfaction of the internet user.
As such, websites with poor user experience (UX) rank very low on a SERP.
The loading speed of a website is also taken into consideration. Websites that take longer to load are less likely to get traffic as 40% of internet users claim they abandon webpages that fail to load in 3 seconds.

Phew, that's it. So, If you're interested in running Search Engine Optimization for your website your self, you sure have a lot of work cut out for you. Prepare to dedicate your time and energy to the project, research properly and ask questions when you encounter problems, also join communities for professionals and experts in search engine optimization.

Hope you learnt a thing or two?
Good luck...
